International Affairs: Sudan

Nathan (Northern Ireland) and Basil (Palestine) gave us an overview of the situation in Sudan and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Foreign aid groups have been ordered out of Sudan because the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir. The students did an excellent job of explaining the issues and providing information about INGOs. At the end of the presentation, there was a heated discussion about whether or not the Arab League was right in refusing the ICC's request to arrest Bashir during a planned trip to Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, we did not have more time for discussion, so many of the questions posed by Nathan and Basil about international law, genocide, justice and foreign aid groups could not be pursued. Certainly, the presentation and discussion gave us a lot to think about.
