Special Needs Dance is a weekly activity, in which we go to a local recreation centre and dance with people who have mental or physical special needs. To dance with special needs face to face and hand in hand needs great patience and creativity. They may make a slow response to whatever you say and only show interests in magnificent steps. It was hard at the beginning. But once you make an effort to it, your company and communication with them will be very much appreciated.
You'll see joys floating on their faces and friendship has been built between us. There are quite a number of volunteers working there, one who has been volunteering for 3 years. This week, we had a special lesson on how to help special needs and understand them better and how to deal with the problems that you may encounter when serving them. I find that not only can we bring joy and energy to special needs, but we also learn a lot from them and from the activity. Special Needs Dance opens to us an outside world and a different perspective of life. |
