Tofino: Botanical Gardens by Bryan Cayabyab (year 32) The purpose of this project is to experience new things in the form of outdoor leadership and recreation and to be close to nature. Saturday: We arrived at Tofino. We fix our things and briefly explored the whole garden. Sunday: We went to the town of Tofino and explored it. We also went to see the art gallery. This became a way for us to see the culture of the first nations in that place. Monday: We started working. Our first work was to clean the shoreline and the little forest. We picked up garbage and some remnants. We went for a hike and during that night, we watched a Japanese movie which was so touching and full of morals. Tuesday: Our work was divided into two. Cristian, Victor and I cleaned a boat. After cleaning we helped the others collect eelgrass [for fertilizer for the gardens] from the sea. In that afternoon, we went to an organization in Tofino that protects the trees. They're anti logging, anti salmon farming and against anything that kills our environment. Wednesday: Victor and I cleaned the boardwalk. We removed the moss growing on it to lessen its detoriation. I was really surprised when I found out that the boardwalk was built by Pearsonites. Surfing! Thursday: Hot Spring Trip! We went to a hotspring using a motored boat. On the way, we had whale watching. It was so spectacular seeing the whales. But the best part of this trip was the ride itself because the ride was so bumpy. The waves were huge. It was really heart striking. After that very bumpy ride, we had a bath on the hot spring. Wow! That was really amazing. See how the nature can do? Friday: Our work today was the same as the previous work. Gathering eelgrasses. After working we went canoeing to the Meares island. Saturday: We went to the Raincoast Interpretative Centre. Here,we were educated more on how the trees, the climate and the first nation. We went again to Meares Island. We had our farewell dinner with the owner of the botanical garden.
