UNITED NATIONS PROJECT

Shaterra Lanee Redd

This project was created to provide students of elementary schools with information about the UN and some of its functions. The teaching was planned through games and creative activities that get the students involved in re-enactments of what the United Natons actually does in order to give them the very best understanding.

This aim, I think, was achieved when we attended three elementary schools of the Duncan area. We taught at Cowichan Station for one school day, Drinkwater for one school day, and Somenos for three school days. Aside from teaching, we hosted a Hallowe'en party at Cowichan Station for three hours. Because of the teachers' strike, the coordinators planned other endeavors for us in order for us to maintain a purpose if the strike continued. In consequence, we went to Providence Farm, which is a farm where disabled and mentally challenged people work and do activities. This farm included seniors, whom I helped with cooking lunch soup and sanding wooden crafts that they created. We listened to a Native speaker talk about his whereabouts and what takes place in the long house.

I gained a better understanding of people and how to act being a guest in someone's home. I learned how to tolerate what I can't change and appreciate the small things in life that I take for granted like my memory, I have been blessed to have this gift. I contributed a helping hand, and a smile to go with it. I contributed any information that I had to give in the best way to deliver it.
