International Council Meeting of the UWC

by Raïsa Mirza (Ontario year 31)

Sitting in my room with the rain pounding outside, I can scarcely believe that only a month ago, I was standing in 35 degree weather half way around the world, in Singapore. I was not there for a vacation. Rather, I was attending the International Council meeting which was going on at the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA).

For the first time, there was at least one student from each of the 10 colleges represented which was a fascinating experience. We were all there as part of a concerted effort in the movement to "link" the different UWC's together.

UWCSEA is very different from Pearson. For one thing, they have almost 3000 students from every age group, with only 150 boarders. They also have a very different setting, in the middle of metropolitan Singapore with easy access to shops and good food. At first, although being a bit questioning about whether it really was a UWC, in whatever sense this word comes to mean to each of us attending one, I realised that although in its outward form, it was different, the core values are the same. It was only then that it dawned on me how much we could truly learn from each other, as part of a bigger movement of schools.

As part of the Linking Group here at Pearson, there was a meeting between all the student delegates and linking co-ordinators from the different colleges at which time we made an action plan for the year to come and how to better "bridge the gap" between our schools. I also had the opportunity to meet many current UWC students, ex- Pearson grads, national committees, board members and attend some truly eye- opening workshops. The whole trip was in fact a great opportunity for widening my horizons and seeing, perhaps for the first time, the bigger picture of what we are about.
