Governance Retreat

by Barb Roberts, Director of External Relations

The Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees of the College, supported by College staff members, met for two days, September 6th and 7th, 2003. Pictured here are (clockwise from the top) Barb Roberts, Ken Dunham, Angus Matthews, Diana Maughan, Paul Zed, Judy Scott, Stuart Walker, Jim Hutchison, Kate Bate Freeman and Mike Gordon. Trustees Sunny Pal and Hilary Pearson are also members of the committee, however sent their regrets.

Two years ago the Governance Committee of the Board was struck as a part of the Board's management. Recently it was agreed that a review of existing Bylaws and related policies of the College should be undertaken. It is recognized that the original bylaws of the College well met the requirements and goals of the College in its early years and that a review of them as well as the overall governance structure was timely and appropriate now almost 30 years later.

The committee has met regularly over this time period via conference call. This retreat was their first opportunity for the committee as a whole to rollup their sleeves and work together in person.

His Honour, the Honourable Bob Hutchison, founding Board member who served as Honorary Secretary of the Board for 12 years and who was involved with the construction of the College's original bylaws in 1973, joined the working session to elaborate on the history related to the establishment of the College's constitution. Bob spoke with great passion of the uniqueness of Pearson College and of the philosophy and principles that influences the design of the College's governance structure. Submissions from other members of the Pearson community were circulated amongst the committee.

The work of the committee is ongoing. Thanks to all the members for their hard work and to all the people who have contributed to this very important process. There will be further information circulated after the Board has received the committee's report.
