If you would find it easier to read The Link without the frame around it of the college homepage, click here. I'll put this option weekly on the editorial page.
Are you looking for someone special? Above is a Village Meeting, where all members of the community gather to discuss topics. Somewhere in the crowd is the face you're searching for -- and if you're lucky it's near the front. Click on each photo if you'd like a large version.
Editorial Welcome

It's a fine morning dawning as I rise early to start assembling photos into the first edition this year of The Link. The pale sky is gradually brightening, shading to blue. The tall trees of the forest around us edge the sky, their black silhouettes shifting slowly to deep green. The muted cedar buildings are emerging from the dark, rooflines sharp and window panes reflecting the light. All is still -- not even a nibbling deer in sight. All is as it should be at Pearson College at the start of a new September day.

Yet there are some striking differences this year. The earth is parched after the driest summer on record, and stories of the fire in July just a couple of kilometres away -- a blaze put out by huge water bombers -- make us acutely aware of the need to control hazards. No one here is likely to complain this winter about rain, if we ever see it again. Ah. What is that sound breaking the morning's silence? It's the student firefighters, singing as they do their morning practice. With gratitude for their readiness to come to the rescue, no one here is likely to complain either about being woken by their song. (Hmmm. A pretty melodious group this year!)

Is that the sound now of a vacuum cleaner? Yes, that's what it is. In Victoria House, the student residence where my husband Theo and I live, the team for the week is sweeping and washing, tidying and vacuuming. Students this year are taking on increased responsibility for cleaning up after themselves, and are also helping out in the college kitchen. I must confess a certain pride in the students of my house: no one I know loves to do chores, but my house has managed them extremely well, and built these routine responsibilities into their day. (I suppose other housefellows might also feel proud, but since I'm the one writing I get to share my biases!)

Almost time to head for class! It's hard to believe that the college has been in session for less than a month. The movement to classes, to activities and meetings, to evening discussions and events is already so familiar to everyone now.

I welcome you all as readers to enter with me the world we live in here at Pearson College. I welcome back for a new year my primary audience of college graduates, and send you all my good wishes for your own lives, wherever you may be on this planet. I also welcome the parents and friends of current students, who may find in these electronic pages a way to share a little bit of the life here. I've packed the pages with photos this time, trying to give you better odds for finding somewhere the special face you're looking for. At the top of each page is a menu bar to take you to the articles of this web magazine. At the mid-point or bottom of each page is a link to take you to the subsequent pages within each article, and then on to the next story.

You can expect The Link weekly on Fridays.
