GENDER AND SEXUALITY DAY

On Thursday, March 3, regular classes were put aside in response to student interest in running a day on gender issues. Organized by students with the support of Nicole Chapman, the day opened with a plenary session, then split into a variety of workshops.

"My reason for wanting to organize this day with Nicole and Samira," says Caitlyn Chappell (year 30), "was to spread awareness amongst students about the diversity of viewpoints that exists when it comes to gender and sexuality, and to give students an opportunity to discuss openly the issues of the day with fellow students."

Topics of the workshops, led by students, included Sex and Religion, Sexual Tourism, Culture and Sex, Gender: Is it a Question of Biology?, Getting "Straight" the Debate on Gay Rights. Workshops also included a film on Sex, Lies, and Global Economics, and an Amnesty International letterwriting session in the campaign to end violence against women.

Outside speakers led sessions on Aboriginal Two-Spirited People and Transgenderism: My Story.

In the library was a special display of books and further references relevant to the day.
