Model United Nations The role-playing of this event in Vancouver was the culmination of considerable student preparation. Students had familiarized themselves with the workings of the United Nations and the topics under discussion in this simulation. Knowledge of the United Nations is part of an activity with leader Abby MacPhail (French teacher). Several students have also gone to schools during project weeks to teach children about the United Nations. |

| by Alex Chan (year 31) From the 19th - 22nd, 30 students went over to Vancouver to participate in the Third Annual Vancouver Model United Nations conference. The conference challenged students by having them role-play as representatives of various member states within the United Nations and other international bodies. Issues that delegates discussed ranged from HIV/AIDS prevention, Migrant Workers and Disease, Piracy in the South China Sea, the separation of Quebec from Canada, and North Korea's Nuclear Policy. Pearson students excelled at the conference, taking charge and working within their committees to reach consensus on the issues at hand. Several students were recognized for their excellent work and came away from the conference with awards. Congratulations go to all of the Pearson students involved in the conference for their excellent work, especially: Tatenda Makanza, Laith Awamleh, Sam Cummings, Priyanka Karuvelil, Jessica Boulanger, and Mohamed Youssef. Janeen Madan, Chauntez Wilson and I worked behind the scenes as directors and chairs of the committee, ensuring that it all went off without a hitch. Overall, the conference was a success and every participant left more aware and enlightened than when they came. NEXT: SPECIAL NEEDS TEENS |
