Twenty pairs of socks will warm Ecuadorian toes.

Can you knit?

This question from Michelle Bridgett, Co-ordinator of the Three Year Option programme, launched Ana Marin Sajquim (year 29) from Guatemala into churning out pairs of socks all last term for children a school in Ecuador. The school was built with funds raised by Japan House and this year has involved Pearson students in the Three Year Option.

Odra Alfaro Marroquin, (year 29) also from Guatemala, joined Ana in her project over Christmas. Between the two of them they have knitted more than 20 pairs.

The warm-and-cuddly pile has been increased by others: Michelle has knitted some herself, and Coops Wynne-Hughes, teacher of English B, has made a couple of hats. A friend of second year student Amber Middleton has also contributed some socks.

Michelle left yesterday for Ecuador, where she will see students involved in both the Ecuadorian and Costa Rican projects. She and Stuart Walker will be assessing this pilot project, now in its first year of operation.

Her suitcase is very full.
